Town of Carbondale now home to a Level 3 DC fast charge station

Level 3 DC chargers have the ability to charge an electric vehicle in about 30 minutes

holy cross energy intalls level 3 fast electric vehicle charger - carbondale coloradoCarbondale, COLO., July 7, 2020—Carbondale is now home to a Level 3 DC fast charger, providing a quick charging option for electric vehicle travelers up and down the Highway 82 corridor.

The DC fast charging station, located on Cowen Drive between the Days Inn and Comfort Inn & Suites, adjacent to the Exxon gas station, can charge most EVs to 80 percent capacity in 20 to 30 minutes. There is a fee of $0.14 per kWh for charging.

Since becoming operational on May 21, the charger has been used over 20 times, according to Kevin Schorzman, Public Works Director for the Town of Carbondale.

“I would anticipate usage to increase as more people become aware of the charger’s location,” he said.

HCE covered the cost of the transformer upgrade as part of their Community Charging program, providing equipment and labor for no cost.

EV sales in Colorado have steadily grown at 28% year over year since 2012, placing it on pace with the Colorado Energy Office’s new ZEV+ scenario of 12% of the total population owning EVs by 2030. In a recent survey, 40% of HCE members indicated they wanted to see more electric vehicle charging stations in HCE’s service territory.

“This project is an excellent example of how multiple entities can come together to accomplish a project when they all work together toward a common goal,” said Bryan Hannegan, CEO of HCE.

Individuals and organizations interested in electric vehicle charging options for their home or business can contact HCE at 970.945.5491 or view our Charge at home. Charge at work. program page to learn more.
