Las 5 maneras más fáciles de ahorrar en la tarifa por demanda.

When you look at your electric bill, your total energy use has historically gotten all the attention. But as of April 1, there’s another piece of the puzzle that will now have a impact on your monthly cost: the Cargo por demanda.

In short, the Demand Charge is based on the highest amount of electricity your home uses at one time, even if that spike only lasts a few minutes.

Since we are a not-for-profit electric cooperative, this charge helps us cover the rising cost of building and maintaining infrastructure (poles, wires, transformers, substations, etc.) that can meet everyone’s peak needs, especially during busy times of day.

The good news? With a few small, consistent habit changes, you can keep that peak lower and save money. Here are five easy, low-effort tips to help you do just that.

Want to learn more about how the Demand Charge works and why it matters?

Stagger, Don’t Stack.

Translation: Don’t run everything at once.

High-energy appliances like clothes dryers, ovens, EV chargers, and space heating can each draw a lot of power. When several of them turn on at the same time, your demand spikes—and so does your bill.

Instead of stacking usage, try staggering it. Run the dryer after dinner, not while cooking. Charge your EV overnight, not during peak household activity. Spreading energy use out over time keeps your demand lower without using less electricity overall.

Watch Out for Hot Water

Hot water can be sneakier than you think, especially with electric resistance water heaters.

Water heaters often turn on after a big draw, like a morning shower or an evening dishwasher cycle. If that happens while other large appliances are running, your demand spike can jump dramatically.

Think about when your hot water kicks on and avoid piling other heavy uses at the same time. For example:

  • Skip running the dryer right after a shower
  • Let dishes wait if you’ve just washed some clothes on hot

A little awareness goes a long way.

Cool It (or Heat It) Before You Need It

Set your home up for success before your peak usage times.

Try pre-cooling your home in the summer (or pre-heating it in the winter) earlier in the day. That way, during the evening hours when you’re home cooking, washing laundry, or watching TV, your system doesn’t have to work as hard.

By easing off the thermostat during busy times, you can reduce demand without sacrificing comfort.

Hit That 'Delay Start' Button

Possibly the easiest tip of all.

Most modern dishwashers have a delayed start feature, and it’s your secret weapon for Demand Charge savings. Load the dishwasher after dinner, hit “Delay Start,” and let it run while you’re asleep, when the rest of your home is quiet electrically.

Same clean dishes. Lower overlap. Lower demand.

Settle Down Before You Charge Up

EV drivers, this one’s for you.

Electric vehicles are incredibly efficient, but charging them can create a big demand spike if it overlaps with all your other home activities. The fix is simple: use your charging app to schedule charging overnight.

Plug in when you get home, set it to start late in the evening, and wake up with a full battery, without stacking charging demand on top of dinner, laundry, and showers.

Consistency is your key to savings!

Since your one highest 15-minute peak each billing cycle will determine your Demand Charge for the month, it’s important to remember to be consistent about how you spread out your electric usage.

By doing so, you can not only reduce your own bill, but you’ll help reduce strain on the electric system, and keep costs down for everyone in the cooperative.

A few simple shifts today can make a noticeable difference on your next bill, and that’s a win worth plugging in for!

Bonus tip!

¡Los termostatos programables y los dispositivos inteligentes pueden ayudarte a ahorrar!

Establezca un horario para mantener sus electrodomésticos apagados durante los momentos del día en que utiliza más electricidad.
