Why rebates benefit every member.

A letter to members from Lisa Reed, Energy Programs Manager

When people hear about energy efficiency or electrification rebates, it is easy to think of them as a benefit for a few households, such as those upgrading to a heat pump, installing a smart electrical panel, or improving insulation. At Holy Cross Energy, these rebates are much more than individual incentives. They are a smart investment that benefits every member of our cooperative.

As a member-owned utility, Holy Cross Energy exists to serve our members, not to generate profits for shareholders. That means every dollar we spend should help keep electricity reliable and affordable. Energy efficiency and electrification rebates help us do exactly that, by lowering system-wide costs over time.

One of the biggest drivers of electric costs is not how much energy we use over a month, but how much we use all at once during peak times. Cold winter evenings and hot summer afternoons put the most strain on the grid. When members use more efficient equipment or switch to modern electric technologies, such as heat pumps, they reduce peak demand and spread energy use more evenly. That can help avoid costly infrastructure upgrades and expensive power purchases. The savings benefit all members through more stable rates.

Efficiency and smart electrification also improve reliability. Homes that use energy more efficiently place less stress on local equipment, which reduces wear and tear and helps prevent outages. In a mountain environment with extreme weather, a more resilient grid benefits everyone.

These programs also support the local economy. Rebate-funded projects create work for local contractors, keeping energy dollars circulating in the communities we serve. At the same time, using energy more efficiently reduces exposure to volatile “peak time” fuel costs.

Our income-qualified rebates ensure that members with limited resources can also participate. When more households can improve their efficiency, the entire system becomes more affordable to operate, reinforcing the cooperative principle that we are stronger when everyone can participate.

Energy efficiency and electrification rebates are not just giveaways. They are thoughtful investments in a reliable grid, stable rates, and a shared energy future. Whether or not you ever use a rebate yourself, the benefits are something every Holy Cross Energy member can share.
