When you look at your electric bill, your total energy use has historically gotten all the attention. But as of today, April 1, there’s another piece of the puzzle that can now have a impact on your monthly cost: the Demand Charge.
In short, the Demand Charge is based on the highest amount of electricity your home uses at one time, even if that spike only lasts a few minutes. Since we are a not-for-profit electric cooperative, this charge helps us cover the growing cost of building and maintaining infrastructure that can meet everyone’s peak needs, especially during busy times of day.
The good news? With a few small, consistent habit changes, you can lower your own peak and save money.
Here are five easy, low-effort tips to help you do just that!
Our operations crews all play an essential role in modernizing and strengthening our electric grid so we can deliver affordable, safe, and reliable power to our members.

As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, we allocate any annual revenue that exceeds expenses back to our members in the form of Member Equity. We have no profits or outside shareholders.
Some of each year’s Member Equity is refunded to members the following year. So if you were a member in 2025, be sure to check your April bill for this refund bill credit.
Member Equity helps keep our rates affordable, by limiting our need to take out expensive loans. Ésa es la diferencia cooperativa.
At Holy Cross Energy, safety guides every decision we make, especially as wildfire risk continues to increase across our region. Protecting our members, employees, and the communities we serve is our highest priority.

We’re hosting some educational—but still super fun!—events in April.
