When you look at your electric bill, your total energy use has historically gotten all the attention. But as of today, April 1, there’s another piece of the puzzle that can now have a impact on your monthly cost: the Demand Charge.

In short, the Demand Charge is based on the highest amount of electricity your home uses at one time, even if that spike only lasts a few minutes. Since we are a not-for-profit electric cooperative, this charge helps us cover the growing cost of building and maintaining infrastructure that can meet everyone’s peak needs, especially during busy times of day.

The good news? With a few small, consistent habit changes, you can lower your own peak and save money.

Here are five easy, low-effort tips to help you do just that!

Our operations crews all play an essential role in modernizing and strengthening our electric grid so we can deliver affordable, safe, and reliable power to our members.

P.S. — Our lineworkers have hearts of gold! 💛 Click through to learn more about our volunteer crews that are helping bring power to homes in the Navajo Nation later this spring.

Good news! You're getting some money back.

As a not-for-profit electric cooperative, we allocate any annual revenue that exceeds expenses back to our members in the form of Member Equity. We have no profits or outside shareholders.

Some of each year’s Member Equity is refunded to members the following year. So if you were a member in 2025, be sure to check your April bill for this refund bill credit.

Member Equity helps keep our rates affordable, by limiting our need to take out expensive loans. Ésa es la diferencia cooperativa.

What are Fire Safety Settings?

At Holy Cross Energy, safety guides every decision we make, especially as wildfire risk continues to increase across our region. Protecting our members, employees, and the communities we serve is our highest priority.

Click through to learn more about these settings and why they’re so important as we approach wildfire season.

We’re hosting some educational—but still super fun!—events in April.

We’ll share helpful insights on the new Demand Charge, highlight our enhanced wildfire mitigation efforts, and show how we’re working to keep your power affordable, safe, reliable, and sustainable. Tasty food and drink included!
