Information on Osprey Nest Removal

Additional Information

Queridos miembros,

We are aware of the concern that some of our members have expressed regarding a recent osprey nest removal affecting our power lines in the Eagle Valley.

Holy Cross Energy has long-standing programs dedicated to protecting raptors and other wildlife, including the installation of nesting platforms and deterrents throughout our service territory.

Osprey are frequent and valued residents in our area, and our operations crews are committed to balancing member safety and electric reliability with wildlife protection. That is why we work proactively with Colorado Parks and Wildlife and U.S. Fish and Wildlife to ensure proper permitting and relocation procedures are followed whenever necessary.

As wildfire risk reaches historic levels across our service territory, we must take a more proactive approach to anything that has the potential to ignite a fire, including wildlife interactions with power lines.

During high wind events, Osprey nests on power poles create a fire risk for the birds’ nests, eggs, and hatchlings as well as wildfire risk on the ground. Removing hazardous nests, installing safer structures, and reducing bird-related faults are all part of our broader wildfire mitigation efforts designed to protect lives, property, and the environment.

We encourage members to learn more about our practices and commitments by reviewing our Avian Protection Plan, available at the link below.
