Application for Pitkin County Solar Project Underway

5 MW project will provide access to clean, locally generated renewable energy

Broomfield, Colo. – RES (Renewable Energy Systems), a leader in the development, engineering, and construction of wind, solar, transmission, and energy storage projects, together with Aspen Consolidated Sanitation District (ACSD), are pleased to announce the submission of an amended application for a 5 MW solar project in Pitkin County. The amended application addresses a more stringent set of project review standards and was submitted in response to Pitkin County’s requested change in process, from Location and Extent Review to Special Use Review.

Take action

The P&Z and BOCC will be asked to vote on the solar project. If they vote no it is unlikely we would be able to bring local solar to Pitkin County in the future. We need the support of our members living in Pitkin County to encourage approval of this project. If you want local solar, we encourage you to take action today.

The 5 MW solar project was proposed in response to repeated requests from Holy Cross Energy members for additional, locally generated renewable energy in Pitkin County. The project will consist of approximately 14,000 solar panels and is expected to provide clean energy for approximately 1,000 households, equal to 1% of Holy Cross Energy’s electricity usage.

“This new local solar project is an important part of our efforts to provide a cleaner, more resilient energy supply for the upper Roaring Fork Valley,” said Bryan Hannegan, President and CEO of Holy Cross Energy. “We very much appreciate the efforts by RES to work with Pitkin County and the affected communities to ensure a more complete project review and to minimize any potential impacts from this important renewable energy project.”

The solar project will be located on 35 acres of ACSD owned land that was previously used for bio-solids and under the flight path of the Aspen/Pitkin County Airport. Construction of the project will generate approximately $475,000 in tax revenues for Pitkin County over the contract life of the project and will not have material impacts on local wildlife.
