Seal the leaks and insulate.<\/h3>\n

Cold drafts got you grabbing another blanket? Whether your home is 10 or 100 years old, it may be losing heat and increasing your winter bills. Seal any penetrations between heated spaces and unheated spaces (for example where light fixtures and ceiling fans are attached to the ceiling and go through to the attic). Use caulk for smaller penetrations and spray foam for larger gaps. Seal areas where plumbing and electrical lines come into the home, and where they come through crawl spaces to the heated spaces above. If your attic has less than 12 inches of insulation, add some. Try to achieve an R value in the range of 49-60. For crawl spaces, try to achieve an R value of at least 19. Check your heating equipment.<\/h3>\n

Tune ups for your heating system are as important as tune ups for your vehicle. Regular inspections and maintenance can prevent equipment failure and keep your systems operating efficiently. Many heating and cooling contractors have special pricing for tune ups at this time of year. Replace furnace filters at least every other month during the heating season. It is also important to clean chimneys and wood stove pipes to remove soot build-up.
