and after a deliberate review process that considered member impacts and cooperative responsibilities, the Holy Cross Energy Board of Directors approved the following changes to the Electric Service Tariffs, Rules, and Regulations, effective April 1, 2026.<\/em><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e6aaa8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"2e6aaa8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" increase necessary?<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-start=\"54\" data-end=\"457\">Like many everyday expenses, the cost of building, maintaining, and upgrading our electric grid (<em>things like poles, wires, transformers, and substations<\/em>) has risen significantly in recent years.<\/li><li><p data-start=\"54\" data-end=\"457\">The co-op is also facing significantly higher charges for the transmission services and power we purchase from Xcel Energy, beginning in 2026.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-start=\"54\" data-end=\"457\">While our shift to cleaner energy sources has helped soften some of these increases, it hasn\u2019t removed them entirely.<\/p><\/li><li><p data-start=\"54\" data-end=\"457\">Our staff has worked to counter as many of these increased costs as possible, by carefully reviewing budgets, delaying non-essential capital projects, and identifying opportunities for savings that don&#8217;t jeopardize the safety or reliability of our service.<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Unlike past rate increases that focused mainly on the Energy Charge or fixed Customer Charge, this adjustment introduces or raises the monthly Demand Charge for all members.<\/p>\n<p>This change begins to more accurately reflect our rising infrastructure and transmission costs, while also still giving you control over your bill by reducing your individual peak demand.<b><\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a4a9c0e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a4a9c0e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">All members will now see a\u00a0Demand Charge\u00a0on their monthly bill:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Large Residential and Large Commercial members will see an increase to their existing Demand Charge.<\/li><li>Small Residential and Small Commercial members will see a new $1.00\/kW Demand Charge.<\/li><li>These charges will help collect the additional revenue needed to cover the co-op&#8217;s increased capacity and infrastructure-related expenses, in a way that everyone is paying for the parts of the system they use.<\/li><\/ul><div><p><strong>Individual bill impacts will vary depending on how and when you use energy:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li>Your new bill will reflect not just how much energy you use, but when you use it.<\/li><li>Spreading out your energy use throughout the day and night can now lead to data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For years, your electric bill was based primarily on how much electricity you consumed, as a large portion of our costs came from the electricity we purchased for you.&nbsp;However, the financial landscape of the power grid has shifted dramatically over the last few years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Much of our cost as an electric utility cost is now driven by our peak demand, not our total energy use.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The grid must be built to meet the highest moment of usage, even if that peak only happens a few times a month.<\/li>\n<li>To account for these changes, our new rate structure begins to separate the cost of the energy from the cost of the capacity infrastructure it takes to support the demand.<\/li>\n<li>The new structure begins to more closely align our billing with how our expenses occur.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-33 elementor-top-column elementor-element 0px;\">This charge helps cover the cost of the actual electricity we purchase (the electrons themselves).<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"letter-spacing: 0px;\">Over the past few years, thanks to recent investments in local, low-cost clean energy projects, we&#8217;ve been able to keep these costs low and prevent major rate increases.<br \/><\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><b>Demand Charge (kw)<\/b><\/p><ul><li>This charge helps pay for the size and strength of the grid needed to serve you.<\/li><li>It helps cover the costs to build, maintain, and upgrade the grid (poles, wires, transformers, and substations).<\/li><li>It also helps cover the fees we pay to use transmission lines to bring power into our valley.<\/li><li>These costs have risen significantly in the past few years.<\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section It\u2019s every drop you use, whether you\u2019re filling a glass or taking a shower.<\/li><li><strong>Demand (kW):<\/strong> The rate of flow of water at any given moment.<\/li><\/ul><p>A house that requires more water at once necessitates larger, more expensive utility pipes to supply that amount of water\u00a0quickly.<\/p><p><b>Similarly, a house that requires more electricity at once requires stronger, more expensive utility electrical infrastructure to provide that energy so quickly.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div
