CFL Guidelines

Not familiar with the use of compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), here are a few general guidelines to follow:

1. CFLs thrive in a “continuous operating” environment.  Avoid installations where the bulb is repeatedly turned “on” and “off.”
2. Install a CFL in a fixture that is on for two or more hours per day.  A front porch light, operating from 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM, is an ideal application.
3.  Avoid installing a standard CFL in a fixture controlled by either a: 1) dimmer; 2) three-way switch: or 3) photocell or movement sensor device.  A wide variety of bulbs are available for special uses; however, be sure to ask if the bulb you are considering is appropriate for the desired application.
4. Using a permanent marker, write the date installed on the ceramic or plastic base of the CFL.  This is a fun way to remind you of the longevity of the CFL.
5. CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and should be disposed of properly.  Used CFLs can be recycled at either Holy Cross Energy office location or at Alpine Banks located within the HCE service territory.
