Compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) contain a very small amount of mercury, averaging 5 milligrams or less. This amount would fit on the tip of a pen, and is 100 times less than the amount found in the average home thermometer. Recycling CFLs is better for the environment as mercury in landfills can contaminate water supplies.
Are CFL's safe to use?
YES! No mercury is released when you use a CFL bulb. The longer a bulb is in use, the less mercury vapor is left within the bulb at the time of disposal. If you break a bulb, immediately open windows to ventilate the room. Do not vacuum the broken bulb pieces. Use a broom and dustpan to sweep up larger pieces, wipe area with a wet paper towel, and dispose in a plastic bag. Use rubber gloves to avoid glass shards and any possible contact with mercury.
Good for the environment?
YES! CFLs use 75% less electricity than incandescent bulbs, and CFLs last up to 10 times longer. Using CFLs is one of the most economical ways to reduce your energy consumption and carbon emissions. One bulb can save you $5 per year. Switch out 10 bulbs and save $50 per year. To save the most, start with bulbs in areas of your home where you use lights often and for long periods of time. CFL's are ideal for hard to get to locations because they last 6 to 10 years. Don't wait, start saving now!
